LG 511c Review: Why It’s Considered One of The Best

By

The LG 511c has to be one of the best (if not, THE best) phone ever to be released by prepaid courier Straight Talk for a number of reasons. And yes I’m aware that Straight Talk usually doesn’t release “above average” models, but still, this one in particular happens to be pretty good despite the fact it’s coming from a prepaid carrier.

Additionally, the LG 511c isn’t available at the moment, as I’ve implied in the first sentence of the first paragraph. Therefore, the info that’ll be presented here is not enough to make a review, but it still manages to suffice for a decent preview, so you still get to learn more about this handset.

So without further delay, it’s time to get my preview started already, and here’s the first thing you should know about this phone: it runs on the CDMA network. Again not much info has leaked about the unit, but still the letter “c” neatly attached to the end of the model name is more than enough to back up the previous statement.

Moving forward, the LG 511c is sure to be a hot seller – I am more than confident that any phone coming in the touch-screen form-factor that’s equipped with a QWERTY keyboard will most definitely sell well. What makes it even cooler is the fact that the keyboard “side-slides” in and out of view, so it can be kept hidden when not needed.

Having a QWERTY keyboard does help a lot with texting faster (given you’re accustomed to these types of phones), and the touch-screen makes navigating the phone a whole lot easier. So as you can see, with the LG 511c, you’re getting “the best” of both worlds in one package.

Another feature that I like about this phone is the 2.0 megapixel camera, a notable upgrade from the typical VGA cameras Straight Talk has been known to release.

Lastly, an mp3 player and mobile web browser (EVDO speed) can also be found in the package, as well as Bluetooth which is more than capable of handling data transfer. The phone is available at Straight Talk.

Any info on the following regarding the LG511c for ST:

1. When it will be available?

2. What is the screen size?

3. Will it have wi-fi?

4. Will it have GPS navigation?

I have been using the new Samsung T528G and like it real well for the $100 price, but I prefer CDMA and would like to have GPS navigation.

Does the touch screen allow dialing and texting or must you use the qwerty keyboard?

Barb 8 months ago

Can you have multiple email accounts?

I just called cust. service. This phone has shipped and should be in Walmart stores very soon.

It has a decent screen size. No GPS. No WiFi. But it does have Web services and it will be using Verizon towers.

Now I just got an e-mail from ST Cust. Service saying they have no information on when this phone will be available.

Don't know what gives here.

When you are texting the same person does it have a thread of your conversation or do you just have the most recent message that they just sent you?

This phone is avsilable but you have to use a zipcode where gsm service is not available.. if you use 59801 on shop tab of straight talk page it shows up

your review is wrong. for starters, the photo you have isn't even the lg that straight talk released. second, it has a 3.2 megapixel camera.

This is aimed at the comment "me" posted YOU need to get your facts right because the phone does in fact have a 2.0 megapixel camera. even check the straight talk site

This phone is a gimmick. It'll be on Sprint towers, not the usual ATT towers that ST normally uses. Sprint has terrible coverage.Sprint usually covers only major cities and interstates, leave those areas and your screwed on communications. Thats why its not available in most towns or states. ATT and Verizon isn't gonna let a $45 Unlimited text, talk, data plan on their towers when they sell 2 year contracts for $85-$100 a month.

steiny 5 months ago

oldtoys1, you are wrong it definatly is on verizon. I just bought the phone and dialing *228 to program and it states verizon.

The Nokia E71 was the best phone ST ever released. The 511c has pretty pathetic specs considering the $199 price tag. The E71 was also $199, but it offered a 3.2 mp camera,Qwerty keyboard, Symbian OS, Free Ovi maps with turn by turn GPS, a host of video file format compatibilities, Internet Radio, Ovi Apps, and I could go on and on.

If the LG 511C is anything like the LG Rumor Touch,,,it'll work great. It is interesting that Verizon would allow ST phones on their towers for $45...Maybe it was some kind of settlement for rippin people off on those early termination fees, eh?...Man just give me a phone with a screen I can see, a keyboard, and a reasonable service price...How hard is that? I'm hoping the new LG 511C will do it!, cause I don't know if I'm gonna stay with ST if they can't come up with some decent phones. Anybody got the LG 511C yet?...is it any good?

Your forgetting no 3G. Still using my E71...

Can u put a picture on your background or does it stay as is ?

cruz 5 months ago

you guys are missing the point here, it's the only smartphone that runs on the Verizon CDMA network through ST, every other smart phone runs off AT&T GSM.

My husband has the lg 511c and he loves loves loves it.

I ordered mine today. Yes, it runs on Verizon towers.

This phone is not considered a smart phone it's considered a touch streen phone. Good enough for us...

Go to the Walmart website, i got mine for $169.99 with free shipping...yippy!!! My husband paid a wopping $199.00...it sucks to be him...lol get the phone you won't be dissapointed...

I just got this LG511C from StraightTalk. Now I'm stuck trying to transfer all my contacts (~900) from my old Samsung SCH-U460 phone (Verizon).

The Samsung is supported well by all sorts of Software, so I have my contacts backed up in my Mac's Address Book, in Susteen DataPilot 7, and (exported from DP 7) as an Excel CSV file. (and, until my Verizon contract got cancelled, online in my old Verizon account via Verizon's Backup Manager App...)

The LG511/ 511C is NOT supported by any of the three generic mobile device software suits known to me (either from inside the software or from the supported phones page on their web-site):

- Susteen DataPilot 7

- ITV BlueSoleil

- Mobile Action Handset Manager

None of the following helped, either:

- in the phone itself:

a) looking for a function to import contacts as bulk

b) APPS/ Look for apps online: there is NO App for this phone at all, esp. no Contacts related (backup/ restore, export/ import) app, ONLY 8 games .. (so much about priorities ..)

- reading the LG511C Pdf from StraightTalk's web-site

- browsing through the FAQ and support section on StraightTalk's web-site

- Googling (LG511C transfer contacts/ LG 511 transfer contacts/ LG 511 import contacts etc. pp. ...)

- browsing through the LG Mobile USA web-page (neither the 511 nor StraightTalk as a provider are listed AT ALL @ www.lg.com/us/mobile-phones/view-all-phones ..)

This is really lame! Do they expect everybody who buys a new phone to retype every fr****g contact 1x1? A contact import function can be considered absolute basic in 2011. And a Backup app that automatically backs up contacts somewhere into "the cloud" (e.g. my StrtaightTalk online account) can be expected, too, no matter how cheap the contract. Shame on you, StraightTalk - really disappointing .. !

Will call StraightTalk customer support next and raise some hell. They need to provide such app in the next couple of weeks, basta!

Whoever figures out a way to get old contacts into the 511C, please post here - Thanks!

I 'bluetoothed' to my old verizon phone and a screen flashed asking if I wanted to send file... my contacts trnsfered to the 511c slicker-n-puppy slobber

JeremyF 4 months ago

thank you bookworm, sounds awesome - I'll try soon then report back.

k.haley 4 months ago

Sure this phone seems advanced at first but thats before you realize it doesnt support you tube, videos dont play with sound, and the mobile web access is prehistoric at best. On the otherhand its sleek, has decent size buttons (your hands wont cramp up), and its very functional but at the extremely high price of 199 your better off choosing a different carrier if u want a kick a$$ touch screen.

JeremyF 4 months ago

great, it DID work - thanks again bookworm :)!

It took some clicking and tapping back and forth, so here's the detailed rundown so others have it easier than I did:

--------------------------

1. Make sure BT is enabled on both phones

2. Pair booth devices.

With BT always only 1 pair is possible. To pair the two phones, all other devices (headset etc.) have to be disconnected/ unpaired on BOTH phones.

Some phones need to be put into 'Discovery Mode' to allow connection via BT. In the case of Samsung SCH-u460 ? LG511c, such mode had to be activated on the Samsung. BT Menu ? Options ? Discovery Mode ? Enable: message: "Enabled for one minute" ? hurry :)

On the LG: BT Menu ? Search ? SCH-u460 found ? tap ? confrim the displayed #. The same # is displayed on the Samsung ? confirm there, too ? both phones are paired now :)

3. Transfer the contacts

On the source phone (here: Samsung): still in the BT menu, click into the name of the other phone (here: LG511c ? Send Name Card ? Mark All ? Done ? Confirm when asked if all selected Name Cards shall be transferred

(you might have to confirm on the other phone to accept incoming contacts)

4 Wait a while. When finished verify on the target phone if all contacts are there :)

------------

BACKING UP CONTACTS

the other way around: pair both phones, but now send from 511c to old phone: BT Menu, tap into name of old phone, Send Name Card, Select All, etc ..

(LG PC Suite IV: the 511c is NOT not compatible (Windows 7 32 bit: Driver not successfully installed: LG CDMA USB Modem). I didn't expect to since it's not even listed in the LG PC Suite 'Compatible Phones' list.)

also I want to share how to send both, text messages (both short and long) and messages containing photos to this phone from any email client:

To send a text email up to 140 chrs to somebody who's with Verizon or StraightTalk: fullnumber@vtext.com, e.g. 8081237654@vtext.com

To send a long (more than 140 chrs) text email or an email containing one or more images (in-line or as attachment) to somebody who's with StraightTalk: fullnumber@mypixmessages.com, e.g. 8081237654@mypixmessages.com

(paths differ here - the Verizon address extension for the picture msg service is #@vzwpix.com)

Thought this might be of interest to some ..

Thanks JeremyF for your specific instructions on how to transfer contact info from one phone to another. It worked! I really appreciate your putting that all in writing to benefit someone who is not tech savy - like me :-)

Again thanks to you and Bookworm. You rock!!!
